On Saturday, August 2 the Men’s Darrows Team and the Women’s Tonawanda Bowling Center Team each became champions in the 34th annual Round Robin Slow Pitch Softball Tournament.
The tournament was hosted by the Alden Legion while being run through the Alden Men’s Softball League.
In the men’s final, Tyler Stoldt’s Darrows Team won their first championship with a 12-6 win over the Avalanche (Ken Buchkowski-Alden/Cheektowaga). Alden’s Scott Airey’s Seeds and Stems Team did not enter this year-they had won the championship for the last 4 years. Scott ended up playing for Ty’s team to keep his championship alive.
In Division I of the Men’s The Avalanche went 3-0 with wins over the Alden Advertiser (Matt Schaefer-Alden), 7-0 (forfeit), My Saloon (Zack Heberlien-Darien) 7-0, and Sh-Boom (Wallace Munn-Alden/Depew-Lancaster) 7-0 (forfeit). My Saloon finished second in the division with wins over the Alden Advertiser. The other divisional score was the Advertiser over Sh-Boom 7-0 (forfeit).
In Division II of the Men’s, Darrows went 3-0 by beating Green Solutions of WNY (Brian Stoldt-Alden) 22-0, The Spartans (Clarence) 12-3 and Gin 2 Win (Cheektowaga). The Spartans took second place in
the division with wins over Gin 2 Win 10-2 and Green Solutions 12-8. Green Solutions beat Gin 2 Win 12-11 in their game.
In the Women’s final, Tonawanda Bowling Center won their second championship with a 10-5 win over The Pink Ladies (West Seneca). They won in 2012 under the name of Chef’s Restaurant and finished with a 2nd place trophy in 2013. This was the first year that the Pink Ladies won a trophy. In Division II of the women, Tonawanda Bowling Center went 3-0 with wins over Malone’s Main Event (Lockport) 8-6, Snyder Creek (Clarence) 5-4, and Muscato & Shatkin (Tammy Ezzo-Alden) 20-9. Malone’s Main Event finished second by defeating Muscato & Shatkin 21-1 and Snyder Creek 7-2. In the other game, Snyder Creek beat Muscato & Shatkin 32-1.
In Division II of the women, the Pink Ladies also went 3-0 with wins over Wales Center Hotel 18-5, The Piney Girls (Laurel Tipton-Alden) 18-3 and Deronde Tire (Lancaster/Depew) 6-5. Second place in the division went to Wales Center Hotel after they beat Deronde Tire 12-9 and The piney Girls. Deronde Tire defeated The Piney Girls in their game 12-11.
In the games for 3rd place trophies The Spartans won by forfeit over My Saloon in the men’s division while Wales Center Hotel won by forfeit over Malone’s Main Event in the women’s division.
The two championship teams selected their MVPs as a memorial to the first MVP in this tournament, Mike McNeill. Darrows selected pitcher Gary Pellittieri and Tonawanda Bowling Center selected Kyrstin Lekki who played third base.
