The Alden Rescue Squad was requested at the Attica State Correctional Facility at 6:45 pm on Thursday, September 9, 1971. Ruhlman was one of the responders. He is not certain who was on the call with him, but clearly remembers the chaos that greeted them. Alden’s ambulance was the first on the scene. They were asked to enter the prison in the rear of the building. Ruhlman recalls the smell of tear gas, “there were helicopters overhead gassing the place”, he said.
